How to register residency in Italy (residenza): a guide for Americans
Registering your residenza is one of the central steps of settling in Italy, and many later steps depend on it. This guide explains what it is, what usually comes before it and how the process normally unfolds, so you can walk into the Comune prepared.
What residenza is
Residenza is your official registered address in a Comune's population register. It is different from domicilio, which is simply where you live or can be reached. Registering residenza is also separate from getting a visa or a permesso di soggiorno.
Why it matters
It lets you request a residence certificate.
It usually comes before the CIE, the electronic identity card.
For many people it is the route to enrolling in the national health service (SSN).
Banks, schools and local services often ask for it.
What you usually need first
Requirements differ by Comune, but people commonly need:
Proof of address: a registered lease, a property deed or a host's declaration (dichiarazione di ospitalità).
For non-EU nationals: your permit or the receipt showing you have applied.
Step by step
Check the website of your Comune for its procedure, forms and whether you need an appointment.
Gather your documents and a copy of each.
Submit the request, in person or online, depending on the Comune.
Keep proof that you submitted it.
Expect a check at your address. The local police often verify that you actually live there, so be reachable and make sure your name appears on the door or mailbox where that is the custom.
Wait for confirmation, then ask for your residence certificate.
After you are registered
Request your residence certificate.
Ask about the CIE and about healthcare enrolment at your ASL.
Update your address with your bank, utilities and employer.
Common mistakes
Informal housing arrangements without any document to prove the address.
Submitting before you have the required papers.
Not being reachable when the address check happens.
Assuming the rules are the same everywhere. Each Comune has its own practice.
Questions to ask the Comune
Do I qualify to register here, and with which documents?
Will someone check my address, and when?
How will I be told once it is confirmed?
Can I get a residence certificate right after?
What comes next
Once your residenza is confirmed, look at healthcare (SSN and ASL) and digital identity. See our guide to healthcare in Italy.
